AI Policy for Syllabus

Students are often confused by conflicting rules regarding AI. As the instructor, your syllabus is the Level 2 Authority, meaning your specific course rules override the general university defaults. Please choose one of the following statements to include in your course syllabus to clarify your expectations.

Option 1: The "Red Light" Policy (Strict Prohibition)

Best for: Language courses, creative writing, or fundamental science courses where the learning objective is independent recall.

🚫 Artificial Intelligence (AI) is NOT Permitted "In this course, the use of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Quillbot, etc.) is strictly prohibited for all assignments, exams, and projects.

Why? The learning objective of this course is to develop your own critical thinking and writing skills independent of external assistance.

Consequences: Any use of AI to generate ideas, outlines, or text will be considered a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy. If you are struggling with an assignment, please contact me or the Writing Center for support."

Option 2: The "Yellow Light" Policy (Conditional Use)

Best for: Most general undergraduate courses. It allows "tools" (grammar checking) but bans "generators" (writing the essay).

āš ļøArtificial Intelligence (AI) is Permitted with Limitations "You are permitted to use generative AI tools only for specific tasks in this course, outlined below:

  • Allowed: Brainstorming topics, outlining ideas, checking grammar/spelling, and finding initial search terms.

  • Not Allowed: You may NOT use AI to write the body text of your essay, answer exam questions, or generate arguments.

Requirement: If you use AI for any allowed task, you must include a Declaration Statement at the end of your assignment explaining which tool you used and how. (See the Library Guide’s 'Declaration & Citing' tab for templates)."

Option 3: The "Green Light" Policy (Full Integration)

Best for: Advanced courses, Engineering, or Computer Science where AI is treated as a professional tool.

āœ… Artificial Intelligence (AI) is Encouraged "This course treats Generative AI as a professional productivity tool. You are encouraged to use tools like ChatGPT or Gemini to analyze data, debug code, and synthesize research.

The Rule: You must be the 'Human in the Loop.' You are responsible for verifying the accuracy of all AI output. AI hallucinations (fake facts) are not an excuse for error. Requirement: You must cite the AI tool using the course citation style (APA/IEEE) and include your prompt history in an Appendix."
